Project A - Iron Chef Design

Topic #2 - Pencils

What was your concept for this site?

For this site, I wanted to make a layout with a hand-made feel. I had fun researching and sketching out my ideas for this part of the project. I wanted each layout to have a "sketched" feel to it. But, I also knew that I wanted to incorporate photgraphs and scans of real objects that are connected with pencils.

For this sketch, I was wanting to keep the feeling that the site was done in pencil. Using colored pencils I shaded the paper differet colors, then erased the parts that I didn't need, which was used to spell out the name of the site... "Pencils". For my second idea, I wanted to incorporate a large item/photo which would be used as the header for the site. I'm not too sure if the navigation was very successul for this layout, though. I wanted it to be more eye-catching and original. When I started my third sketch, I had a picture in my mind of a notebook with writing on it and the word "Pencils" written out in pencil. I also wanted to make sure the navigation didn't alter the look of the site by being too clean and not hand-made.

Which design did you choose and why?

I chose my third sketch and altared it a bit before putting it into photoshop. I definitely wanted to incorporate the use of photos or scans in my layout and wanted to add additional bits of "eye-candy" that would allow you to look at the site as a whole.

What changes did you make to your revision and why?

The changes I made to my original deisgn were to get rid of the shaded in background in the content area. I also added an additional pencil to the bottom of the design as the footer image to tie in the pencil theme there as well. I also moved the pencil shavings over, trying to balance everything out.
